GLP-1 medication
Weight loss medication names can refer to an ingredient, a brand or a particular formulation. For adults in Houston considering a medical weight loss program, these distinctions affect the treatment discussion. This guide focuses on semaglutide and tirzepatide, their approved uses, and the practical questions to resolve before starting a prescription.
Two molecules
An ingredient name does not tell you everything about a prescription. Semaglutide treatment acts on the GLP-1 receptor, which is involved in appetite and blood sugar regulation. Different semaglutide products have different approved uses. Wegovy for weight management includes an injection and a daily tablet for eligible adults; the formulations have their own instructions and are not interchangeable milligram for milligram.
The other ingredient covered here, tirzepatide, acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Mounjaro and Zepbound contain it, but their treatment indications differ. Zepbound weight loss treatment is approved for qualifying adults alongside reduced-calorie eating and increased physical activity. The number of hormone receptors a medicine targets does not determine whether it is the right prescription for a particular person.
Choosing treatment also involves previous medication experience, existing conditions, other prescriptions and the cost of continuing care. A clinician can explain why one option fits those factors or why medication is unsuitable. Early appetite changes do not establish a long-term result, and weight can return after treatment stops. Eating habits, activity and follow-up remain part of care throughout treatment and maintenance.
Getting a prescription
BMI, conditions, personal and family history, and everything else you take. Some histories rule a GLP-1 out entirely, and that is decided here.
Semaglutide or tirzepatide, injectable or tablet. Availability and your drug plan are part of the decision, not an afterthought.
Every GLP-1 starts low. The starting dose is not a treatment dose, it is there to let your body adjust.
The dose steps up on a schedule, and only if the current step is tolerated. Rushing this is what causes most of the misery people describe.

Answers about brand names, tablet options, prescribing decisions and the costs behind a treatment plan.
I had the brand names muddled completely. Ten minutes of explanation and I finally understood what I was actually being prescribed and why.
Switched molecules after the first one did not agree with me. That was treated as a normal adjustment rather than a failure.
The tablet suited me better than a weekly injection. The instructions about timing and food were stricter than I expected but they were explained clearly.
They checked what my cardiologist had me on before writing anything. Two things needed spacing out.
