Qualifying conditions
A weight-related diagnosis can affect both medication eligibility and the treatment plan. For adults in Houston, the useful question is how a documented condition fits the proposed prescription, together with BMI, medical history and other treatment.
The five
For many adult weight-management medicines, BMI requirements distinguish obesity from overweight accompanied by a related health condition. High blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea are examples that may matter. The diagnosis needs to be assessed in context; the presence of a condition does not automatically establish that every medication is suitable.
The reason for prescribing can also extend beyond weight management. Wegovy treatment has a specific cardiovascular risk-reduction indication for adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity. That is different from assuming any risk factor establishes the same indication. Its injection also has a defined use for certain adults with MASH and liver fibrosis, which requires its own clinical assessment.
Zepbound treatment has a separate indication for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. A sleep diagnosis and its severity therefore matter. Symptoms such as snoring can justify a medical discussion, but they cannot identify the cause by themselves. These examples show why treatment should follow a confirmed clinical picture and the exact product label, rather than a general list of qualifying conditions.
Getting it documented
Something mentioned once in an appointment is not the same as a diagnosis on file. Ask your family doctor what is actually recorded.
Blood sugar, blood pressure, lipids and a sleep study are the usual four. None of them are difficult to arrange.
Insurers want documentation, not recollection. A written diagnosis is what a prior authorisation is assessed against.
With the diagnosis on record, a BMI between 27 and 30 usually meets the threshold.
Why it matters twice
A diagnosis can affect what needs monitoring during treatment. For someone considering Ozempic treatment for diabetes, the clinician should review glucose control, other medicines and relevant eye or kidney history. Using insulin or a sulfonylurea alongside certain GLP-1 medicines can raise the risk of low blood sugar. A dose reduction may be needed, but it is not an automatic instruction to reduce every diabetes medicine. Any adjustment should be agreed with the prescriber who is managing that treatment.
Mounjaro treatment also has defined diabetes and cardiovascular indications. The intended benefit should be explained for the individual patient. During physician-supervised weight loss care, useful records can include recent results, a current medication list and the names of clinicians treating related conditions. Ask which measures will be followed and who will respond to changes. Weight change alone does not show whether blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea or another condition is adequately controlled.

Common questions
How diagnoses, symptoms and existing care affect a prescription assessment.
The prediabetes result had been sitting in my file for two years and nobody had connected it to anything. Here it was the first thing raised.
Sent for testing before any decision. Confirmed apnea, which meant I qualified and also explained why I was exhausted.
My BP tablets came down as the weight did. That was expected and planned rather than a surprise.
They told me exactly what my insurer would need documented and why. The claim went through first time.

Next step
A documented condition can move the threshold from 30 to 27. If something has been suspected but never tested, say so and it gets looked at.
