Not for everyone
Some health histories rule out a particular GLP-1 medicine; others call for further assessment or a different approach. Houston adults considering treatment need the exact product label checked alongside allergies, digestive health and pregnancy plans.
Ruled out
Products containing semaglutide or tirzepatide are contraindicated for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. These are specific diagnoses, not a ban covering every thyroid condition. Before semaglutide treatment, identify the type of cancer or endocrine disorder in the history if possible. Uncertainty should be discussed, not filled in with a guess.
A previous serious allergic reaction to the intended drug or one of its ingredients is also a contraindication in the relevant labeling. That is different from nausea or another expected side effect. The same distinction matters with tirzepatide treatment. If treatment causes breathing difficulty or swelling of the tongue or throat, stop using it and seek emergency help immediately. Other GLP-1 products must be checked against their own labels.
Weight-loss medication should not be used during pregnancy. Weight loss care for women should account for pregnancy intentions before a prescription begins. Wegovy used for weight management should stop at least two months before a planned pregnancy, and should be discontinued if pregnancy occurs. Breastfeeding requires a separate review of the exact product and formulation; it should not be treated as the same decision as pregnancy.
The screening
Thyroid cancer and endocrine syndromes in particular. If you are unsure, it is worth asking relatives before the appointment rather than guessing.
Pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, severe gastrointestinal conditions and any previous reaction to a GLP-1.
Especially diabetes treatment, thyroid medication and anything with strict absorption timing.
Whether pregnancy is possible now or planned, and what contraception is in place.
Care, not exclusion
Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro and Zepbound are not recommended for people with severe gastroparesis, a condition in which the stomach empties too slowly. This recommendation should not be presented as a problem that slower dose increases necessarily solve. A history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease or persistent digestive symptoms also needs clinical review before treatment. In physician-supervised weight loss care, explain what was diagnosed, when it happened and whether symptoms remain. Do not dismiss severe or ongoing abdominal pain as routine nausea.
Different weight loss medications carry different warnings and interactions. Provide details of existing prescriptions, supplements, eye disease, kidney problems and planned procedures so the clinician can assess the proposed product. A personalized weight loss plan may need a different medicine or an approach without medication. If severe abdominal pain persists while taking one of these medicines, stop it and seek urgent medical assessment. Difficulty breathing or throat swelling requires immediate emergency care.

Common questions
Thyroid history, earlier reactions, contraception and other medicines need specific answers.
Family thyroid history meant no. Disappointing, but they explained it properly and did not try to talk around it.
Slower titration because of an old gallbladder issue. Took longer and I never had a problem.
Reacted badly elsewhere. They worked out it was the speed rather than the drug and restarted properly.
Asked about pregnancy plans before anything else. Timing changed and that was the right call.

The questions take a few minutes and they are the difference between safe treatment and a prescription from someone who never looked.
