Do I qualify
Weight loss medication eligibility depends on the product, your health history and the reason for treatment. For Houston adults, a BMI result can begin the discussion, but a prescription requires an individual clinical assessment.
Three tests
An assessment starts with the problem treatment is meant to address. For many adult weight-management prescriptions, BMI requirements for medication begin at 30, or at 27 when a weight-related condition is present. These thresholds help identify people for evaluation; they do not establish that a particular medicine is appropriate.
The next step is to consider qualifying health conditions alongside your wider history. Relevant information includes diagnosed illnesses, previous treatment, medicines and supplements, allergies, and pregnancy plans. A clinician may need examination findings, recent records or additional testing. Having tried weight loss before can help explain what support you need now.
The intended prescription must also be clear. Weight loss medication options have different approved uses, age groups and precautions. A medicine prescribed for diabetes is assessed for that purpose; its brand name does not make it a weight-management prescription. Ask which condition is being treated, why that product is being considered and what follow-up would involve. An online result cannot settle those questions by itself.
The check
Height and weight give the number. It is a crude measure and it is only the entry gate, but it is where the process starts.
Anything diagnosed matters, particularly prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. Each of these lowers the BMI threshold.
Everything you take, including anything from another specialist. This is where a GLP-1 gets ruled out or the plan gets adjusted.
Either you are a candidate and the next steps are explained, or you are not and you are told exactly why.
Red flags
Useful preparation includes the names and doses of your medicines, relevant diagnoses and what happened with earlier treatments. The guide to GLP-1 contraindications and precautions explains why an exclusion is different from a risk needing further review. Mention persistent digestive symptoms, previous medication reactions and any planned procedure. If family medical details are uncertain, say that clearly rather than recording an assumed answer. A clinician can identify which missing information matters for the proposed prescription.
In physician-supervised weight loss care, the assessment may lead to a prescription, further investigation or another treatment approach. A personalized weight loss plan should account for practical needs as well as clinical findings. Ask about the provider responsible for follow-up, appointment arrangements and continuing charges. An insurer makes a separate decision about payment under its own policy. Neither a completed questionnaire nor an insurance approval replaces the prescribing clinician's judgment.

What screening can tell you, which records help and why treatment decisions differ.
The three-way split between what the label says, what my insurer pays and what the doctor thinks was explained in five minutes. Nobody had done that before.
Assumed I was under the line. My prediabetes diagnosis meant I was not, which I only found out by asking.
They asked about a family thyroid history I had forgotten about entirely. It changed the plan and I am glad they asked.
Did not qualify and was told plainly why, with something else to try. Better than a prescription from someone who never looked.
