BMI thresholds
BMI helps identify when weight-management medication may be considered. Houston adults often encounter thresholds of 30, or 27 with a weight-related condition. The number must be interpreted with the exact prescription and clinical history.
The numbers
For adult weight management, the familiar starting criteria are a BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related health condition. They appear in the clinical framework for medicines such as semaglutide weight loss treatment. Meeting a numerical threshold identifies a reason to consider treatment; it does not confirm suitability or predict the result.
At a BMI from 27 to below 30, qualifying health conditions become particularly relevant. Examples include high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels and type 2 diabetes. The clinician needs an accurate account of your health and the reason for prescribing. A suspected condition should be assessed on its own merits rather than assumed to satisfy a requirement.
These adult weight-management criteria should not be applied to every use of every medicine. Zepbound treatment, for example, has a separate indication for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. Other products have diabetes or additional indications. Children also require age-appropriate criteria. Ask which indication applies before treating a BMI cutoff as a universal rule.
Working it out
Height without shoes, weight first thing. Small errors in height affect the result more than people expect, because it is squared.
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Any calculator will do it, and the number is the same everywhere.
If you land between 27 and 30, whether you have a documented weight-related condition is the deciding factor.
A clinician checks the figure against your records, because self-reported height and weight drift.
Its limits
BMI expresses weight relative to height. It does not separate muscle, fat and bone or show where body fat is carried. Those limitations matter when considering weight loss medication eligibility. A clinician may consider physical examination, blood pressure, relevant laboratory results and your medical history alongside the calculation. A result from a home scale is useful information to bring, but it should not be treated as a diagnosis or a complete estimate of treatment risk.
An assessment for physician-supervised weight loss should use measurements accurately rather than round a result to reach a preferred category. If you are near a threshold, ask how your height, weight and prior records will be checked. A personalized weight loss plan can address health needs even when a particular prescription is unsuitable. Treatment choices and payer requirements are separate matters, and neither can be resolved by changing the number entered into a calculator.

Straightforward. Number was above the line, the conversation moved on to my history rather than dwelling on it.
Was sent for a sleep study before anything was decided. Turned out I did have apnea, which changed everything.
My height was out by three centimetres from what I had been telling people. Small change, noticeable difference in the number.
First time anyone admitted BMI is a blunt tool and told me what else they were looking at.

The number on its own rarely settles it. The free check looks at your BMI alongside the conditions and medications that actually decide the answer.
